Botox injections
Botox is a form of Botulinum toxin, which is a commonly used drug for aesthetic as well as medical purposes (such as blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm). It is used to smooth wrinkles by weakening the contracting muscles, and it can improve the appearance of the skin. The overall appearance looks more relaxed and rejuvenated.
How does Botox work?
Botox acts by blocking the transmission of nerve impulses across the nerve-muscle junction. As the effects of Botox only lasts up to an average of 3 to 4 months, repeat injections would be needed to regain the desired effect.
How is Botox given?
Anaesthetic cream is applied before Botox injections are given. A very fine needle is used and the Botox is given in small doses. It takes about 2 to 5 days before you can see the effects of Botox. The effect is best appreciated at about 2 weeks. There may be mild swelling over the areas of injection for a day or 2.
